The Durham Rail Trail is a long planned for, 1.8 mile, multi-use trail. It reclaims a portion of the unused Norfolk and Southern rail bed for walking and biking from North Durham to Downtown. Along the way users can connect to major transit stations, take in views above the South Ellerbe Stormwater project, explore nature in wooded sections or venture onto the nearby Ellerbe Creek Trail and American Tobacco Trail. The trail will also provide a home for public art that engages the imagination and captures the unique and authentic stories of Durham. Throughout the design and construction process the City of Durham, Community Partners, Stakeholders and Designers will seek feedback to make this trail enjoyable and reflective of our community.
Based on community feedback, budget and technical analysis, an
alignment for the basic trail has been set which includes generous
path widths and materials, neighborhood connections and end
points, and specific elements for roadway crossings. Lighting is
recommended for the basic trail and the basic trail alignment also
leaves room for future possible public art, amenities, green
infrastructure and plazas.

The City of Durham hosted events throughout 2022 for residents and adjacent property owners to explore the character of the trail and give input on key design issues along the corridor. Read the compendium of what we heard.
How is the City addressing racial equity and housing concerns around the trail?
Community partners are working in underrepresented communities, new affordable rental housing is being constructed downtown, and programs are available City wide to support low income home owners and renters.
